Finnish Cabbage Casserole Recipe – Kaalilaatikko

Finnish cabbage casserole is very easy to prepare. It is easy to prepare the day before. I learned the recipe for the cabbage casserole from my mum. The quantities are therefore rather approximate and more to the point. But it works every time. And the best thing is that children also like this casserole.

  • 1 white cabbage
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 – 2 onions
  • 500 – 700 g minced beef
  • Olive oil
  • Pepper and salt
  • Vegetable stock
  • 1 egg
  • some milk
  • Butter
  • Breadcrumbs for the topping

Cut the cabbage into small pieces. In the meantime, cook the rice in water. Heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onions and fry the minced meat. Then mix the rice, cabbage and mince together and season. Then place in a greased casserole dish. Make a sauce with the stock, egg and milk and pour over. Coat the surface with breadcrumbs and add butter flakes. Cook in the oven at 200 degrees for about an hour.

If it looks too dry in between, you can add some broth. When the crust starts to brown nicely, the casserole is ready.
